Koenen served as a vice-captain beneath Zielke final season and stated it’s a large honour to be voted into the highest function by her teammates.

Lions coach Craig Starcevich stated Koenen is the best candidate to take the reins from Zielke.

“Off the sphere, she’s all the time had nice take care of her teammates,” Starcevich stated.

“However it’s her selflessness on the sphere and her understanding of enjoying her function for the sake of the workforce that has struck a chord together with her teammates.

“A number of the roles she performed final 12 months in opposition to harmful opposition has actually resonated together with her teammates, and it is that mixed with the good empathy she’s proven that has seen her land on this place.”

Zielke hung up her boots after main Brisbane to their 18-point grand ultimate win over Adelaide in April.

She has since joined Starcevich’s teaching panel as an assistant.
